#HowToFriday with Emma Sadleir

In #HowToFriday on

David Ogilvy’s “8 Habits of Highly Creative People” urges us to be constantly curious. It’s the only way we will see the endless trail of ideas that surround us. Our belief is that in being exposed to diverse people, we’ll be able to spark ideas and solve problems. Because, sometimes, solutions to problems come from totally unexpected sources.

This is what How To Friday is all about – exploring new territory and learning new skills. Emma Sadleir is our guest next week Friday and she’ll be chatting about the legal considerations of using social media. She has the unenviable task of trying to police the internet.

She’s a media law consultant and worked in the media litigation department of Webber Wentzel for five years before going on her own. Much of her work involves creating social media strategies and policies for corporates and schools, and providing training and workshops on social media law.

So if you’ve ever wondered whether you can get fired for what you say on Twitter or arrested for threatening a rampage on Facebook, make sure you don’t miss this one! If you’d like to attend, send us a mail. Or make sure you follow along from 11:00 on 17 May at #HowToFriday and @OgilvyJoburg.

How to Friday with Nick Bedford and Joanne Doyle

In #HowToFriday on

You might still see social as a rowdy child, indulged as the youngest addition to the family of tools we use. Truth be told, social’s no longer an infant – it is a mainstream tool that’s learning to earn its keep just like the older kids. One of the most important steps to bringing some discipline to this problem child is through proper measurement.

Looking at simple metrics like retweets, followers and influence isn’t cutting it anymore. Instead, we should be looking at our business goals and measuring the role that social media has played in reaching them. It means making sense of a fast-paced marketing channel and the reams of data it produces.  That’s why we’re so excited to be working with the new Brandseye monitoring tool. It enables us to gather real-time, human-verified insights into what people think and are talking about easily and at any time.

Social@Ogilvy Business Director, Nick Bedford, will be talking with Joane Doyle from Brandsey about what this means for you and the strategy you’re trying to crack, the idea that you’re not sure will resonate and, yes, measuring how well your campaign did so you can create an awesome awards entry. Send an email if you’d like to attend on Friday between 11:00 and 12:00 and make sure to follow along on #HowToFriday.

How to Friday with Farai Madzima

In #HowToFriday on

Farai’s job is to help Ogilvy’s clients treat their customers better through designing humane experiences on and offline. He’ll be talking about some of the stupid things that people do in the digital and real world…like this video from Google shows so brilliantly:

On Friday 15 March’s session, he wants to teach you how to do his job – “User Experience Design” – so that he can go and pursue his life’s big mission: categorising all of Africa’s music.

He’s also going to answer some important questions, including but not limited to:

  • Why is the iPhone the greatest social media campaign ever (even without a Facebook or Twitter page)?
  • What is the Underpants Gnomes Social Media Strategy?
  • Is the “Save” button the most stupid invention in computing history?
  • How can we use behavioural psychology to create ads that sell more?
  • Why are the first 11 characters of an email’s subject line more important that the rest?

Follow him and join in the #HowToFriday conversation! Remember that if you want to join on Friday 15 March from 11:00 to 12:00, send us a mail and we’ll put you on the guest list.
